Pubs and bars

Our nearest pub, five minutes walk away at 57 Belle Vue Rd, BS5 6DP. Spacious, bright and airy with a big courtyard, serving real ales, stone baked pizzas and a range of other good food. Friendly and civilised, and particularly popular with the 25-35 age group. Child and dog friendly. There's often something on upstairs, it's always worth checking their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/greenbank57/

A short walk to the other end of our road at 438 Stapleton Rd BS5 6NR. The Black Swan is a large dance venue with two decent dancefloors and a big 'garden'. Comfortably dark and grungy, and very much a party venue (a bit quiet when there's no club night on). A broad range of music involved - and the occasional live band - it's worth checking the flyers outside the pub or their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/theblackswaneaston/

A ten minute walk away at 223 Easton Rd BS5 0EG, opposite Easton Community Centre. The Plough is an Easton and Bristol institution and has been the local lively late night for over 40 years. Always popular, particularly at weekends, and usually packed inside, as well as outside in the popular 'garden' (never mind the time of year). Crowded dancing at one end, crowded chatting around the tables at the other end, and a busy pool table. Always safe, friendly, and a great place for meeting inebriated locals and visitors from all over the UK and the rest of the world who've come to experience this legendary pub. DJs or bands on most weekend nights, check out their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ThePloughEaston/ (On the rare occasions when it snows, the walk back up the cycle path is an alternative and magical way home after a late night in the Plough).

AKA 'The Loaf'. Ten minutes walk away at 51 St Marks Rd BS5 6HX, just by Stapleton Road Station and opposite the Mosque and the One Stop Thali. Relatively recently reopened so we can't comment on the food, although it has a full pub type menu and does Sunday roasts. Large and nice beer garden, three pool tables and a dart board, and lots of comfortable seating.

Ten minutes walk away at 60-62 Chelsea Rd BS5 6AU, near the Plough. Small alternative pub with a small garden. Check out the Sid and Nancy toilet doors. Occasional DJs and live music, some quite experimental. Check their Facebook page for what's on. https://www.facebook.com/TheChelseaInnBS5/

Food scene

The One-Stop Thali is a trendy award-winning restaurant with a tasty and small menu of Indian food, including veggie and vegan options. It has a café/coffee-shop vibe and is popular with mums with pre-school kids in the morning and at lunchtime, and couples and groups of friends in the evening. They also have a small range of beer and wine, although it's not really a place to go for just a drink.

Loved by Bristolians, the Bristol Sweet Mart is an independently owned, cultural supermarket on St Mark’s Road. It’s been an Easton landmark since 1978, and its family-friendly service is some of the best in the city. Alongside staple ingredients and produce, there are over 1000 types of herbs on the shelves, fruit and vegetables from all over the world and a deli which sells freshly-made snacks, homemade curries and Indian sweets.

Our nearest café and coffee place, a few minutes walk away at 7 Greenbank Rd BS5 6EZ. A great spot for breakfast, lunch and brunch with locally-sourced ingredients. Quite small, so probably not suited for large groups. Occasionally open early evenings, keep an eye on the board outside. http://www.estekitchen.com/

Dela means ‘share’ in Swedish, and this is a key part of the café’s ethos. Tucked away in Mivart Studios, a stone’s throw away from St Marks Road, this little place is really something special with great brunches, sharing plates and drinks.

Top-end coffee and amazing waffles, the café is now venturing into evening dining too with pop-ups from the likes of Michelin-starred chef David Hazell.

Five minutes walk away at 94 St Marks Rd BS5 6JH, at the bottom of Mivart Street. Bangladeshi owned 'Indian' restaurant with the usual range of dishes. The best thing from our point of view is that it is BYO, i.e. you can bring your own drink. Cheap as a result and popular with groups of friends. http://easterntastebristol.com/

A healthy food shop a few minutes walk away at 1-3 Greenbank Rd BS5 6EZ, opposite the Greenbank pub and very near Este Cafe. A deceptively big place and the nearest to us for buying all things healthy and organic to cook up yourself.

Indian restaurant, five minutes walk away at BS5 6DL near St. Marks Road and Stapleton Road station. More expensive than Eastern Taste, but nicer food too. Not a BYO, i.e. you can't bring your own drink, though they sell alcohol. https://msalalibrary.co.uk/

Sightseeing

Our nearest large park, about five minutes walk away past the cemetery, BS5 6XA. There's not much in the way of sights, although the lakes at the bottom and the old lido are worth a look, and there is a decent playground. There are occasional festivals held there in the summer, but the park is most popular with runners because there is a one mile route marked around it. It's also possible to walk all the way out to the countryside by going from the bottom of Eastville park and following the Frome River through Snuff Mills up to Frenchay Common and on into the countryside. Alternatively you can turn off before Snuff Mills and explore Stoke Park instead, with nice views over the M32 and beyond.
