The best, most 'Scottish' pubs are around the Kelvingrove area; you'll find a nice mix of locals and tourists, an extraordinary whisky range and quite often live music! On Argyle Street in the west end, roughly 30 minute's walk from the apartment, there is The Ben Nevis, The Park Bar and the Islay Inn. They are all in the area that the Highlanders would stay when they came down to the big city. All three have free live music on Thursday to Sunday. The Islay will be more rock, the Ben Nevis more traditional and the Park Bar the most lively.

City centre (get off at Buchanan Street subway station). Nice mix of locals and tourists. Insane whisky selection displayed on floor-to-ceiling shelves behind the bar (they climb a ladder to reach the ones on the top, very Instagrammable) - whether you're a whisky novice or expert, this is where you want to be. Knowledgeable friendly staff.

Free entry to the Saturday night ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) every week! Just about the most Scottish thing you can do - kick up your heels with a nice mix of locals and tourists, young and old. Don't worry if you don't know the steps, everything's explained and you get a practice run through before it really gets going! Reasonably priced drinks, friendly staff, plenty of space to dance. Come dressed to fling yourselves around and work up a proper sweat (flat shoes, nothing that can fall down or fly off - it can get vigorous!). Come and see why ceilidh dancing is Scotland's answer to speed-dating!

A surprisingly easy day out from Glasgow Central train station - a train and ferry ticket can be bought at the station and within about an hour and a half you're on the Isle of Arran, known as "Scotland in miniature!". All the majestic highland scenery your Instagram will thank you for, within a stone's throw of the city. Can't beat it. Great for anyone - you can make the day as active as you like (climb Goat Fell if you're keen!)
