Lamma Food Scene

Locals' favorite restaurants on Lamma Island for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner.
Carlos's Tapas / Candela For some of the best tapas in Hong Kong – at super reasonable prices, no less – check out Candela (or what the locals call "Carlos Tapas"). Buzzing every night of the week, Candela’s lively vibe is great for group gatherings over delicious Spanish small plates, and a jug or two of refreshing sangria. There are many vegetarian options. The Patatas Bravas and tortilla are definitely on par with top tapas joints in Spain. The salads and meatballs are amazing. Candela serve 2 menus, takeaway, and à la carte, make sure you check out both! 23 Main Street, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma

Andy’s Seafood / Sau Kee Restaurant Known for having some of the best seafood in Hong Kong, Lamma has a number of great authentic local seafood restaurants, but Andy’s Seafood (which has been running for 19 years!), is hands down the best for Cantonese staples done right. Perfect for a post-hike feast, order the minced quail wrapped in crispy lettuce, salt and pepper squid, eggplant hotpot, garlic prawns and a couple of chilled Tsing Tao beers to satisfy a hungry table. Make sure to call ahead and book the alfresco terrace for a sunset dinner with a view. 43 Main Street, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma

Banyan Bay Cafe For a wholesome brunch to cure any hangover, head down to Banyan Bay Cafe where you will be taken care of with friendly service and generous portions of perfectly poached eggs, golden toasted bread and fresh fruit smoothies. My usual is full vegetarian breakfast, extra hashbrowns, and banana soy smoothie. Cath's Special and Healthy Vegetarian are also very popular. Ask to sit around the back for a quiet seaside view when it's not too hot out. 67 Main Street, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island

Bombay Bar & Restaurant For someone that doesn't usually handle spice at all, I took an immediate liking to Indian food when I tried Bombay for the first time. Perfect for any evening when you crave to treat yourself with hearty comfort food. With an extensive menu, they have a huge selection of meat, vegetarian and seafood options. Menu highlights: Samosa, Onion Bhaji, Chicken Tikka, Saag Paneer, Channa Masala, Vegetable Curry. Cheese Nan and Saffron Rice are must-order sides. You can ask for less spicy. The staff is very friendly. G/F, 6 Yung Shue Wan Back Street, Lamma Island

Hong Kong Best Asian Restaurants

My favourite Asian restaurants across Hong Kong. I only picked to list Asian restaurants. Ask for more recommendations if you are looking for western, I also have a long list for you ;)
Hands down the best Xiao Long Bao in Hong Kong (in my opinion, after trying and comparing many across Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). It is set in a casual dining atmosphere with comfortable booth seatings. Order a basket (or two) of their signature xiao long bao ($88 for 8pcs), though my favorite go-to are the Original and Truffle. Complete with Chilled Black Fungus in Peppercorn Vinaigrette and Dan Dan Noodles. Call up to book especially if you have a large group.

Yardbird is a modern izakaya that specializes in chicken yakitori. A ‘no reservations,’ family-style restaurant that combines the highest level of service with the best quality food and drinks in a fun and relaxed environment. Highlights: Chicken meatball, Corn Tempura, Liver Moose, The KFC (Korean fried cauliflower), Rice Cakes, Chicken and Egg Rice, Peanut butter ice cream. As well as their extensive list of cocktails and Japanese Whiskeys. P.S. Walk-in only. If you want to eat inside without a wait, pop in early before the crowds settle in.

Ho Lee Fook is best when you’re craving the addictive qualities
of Asian takeaway and a loud Chinatown-basement vibe—except here dishes are creatively executed, ingredients are carefully sourced and a touch of restraint allows for appreciation of an unconventional approach. The concept is intentionally ironic in Hong Kong a city where diners demand authenticity in their Chinese cuisine. Homey dishes are served family-style, mostly plated in a nonchalant mound and heavily seasoned with spices, coriander and fried shallots capturing the essence of the chef’s Taiwanese background. Highlights: Mom’s dumplings, Kurobuta pork char siu, Fried Brussels sprouts with cauliflower and bacon chilli jam, Hamachi P.S. Walk-in only. If you want to eat inside without a wait, pop in early before the crowds settle in.

A Vietnamese street food experience, (Bia Hoi) fresh Vietnamese draft beer style bar and eatery. The casual 45-seat space is a comfortable but lively (i.e. noisy) hangout, with a minimalist modern design that still feels laidback and completely unpretentious. Highlights: VFC (Vietnamese Fried Chicken Wings), Short rib lettuce wrap, Morning Glory, Pho Roll. Cocktails: Pho-jito, Far East Smash, Saigon Sour. P.S. Walk-in only. If you want to eat inside without a wait, pop in early before the crowds settle in.
