This little guide will provide the secrets, insights and our favourite destinations of the South Hams, so in other words this is your Bible to living here! This includes places to visit from Kingsbridge to Dartmouth and the Do's and Don'ts of staying in Devon. We have learned many tricks of the trades from living here our whole lives and would love to share them with you to maximize your experience whilst staying here!
The hometown of our rentals, Kingsbridge is the centre of the South Hams with Fore street holding the shops, bakeries and Cinema. There are many things to do here such as taking a boat trip (The Rivermaid) from the Estuary to Salcombe or visiting the Farmers market on the Quay which is held every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. There are many events held in Kingsbridge such as the Food and Music festival which is the 1st weekend in June and is held from Friday - Sunday. There is also Fair week which is normally held on the 3rd week of July, which is the best week as you get to see the whole community come together.
There are many eateries in town, Our personal favourite is the Crabshell since it’s at the bottom of our hill! They offer the best pizza's around here and on a Friday night sitting in the sun on the benches with a glass of cold wine... well its Heaven! The Old Bakery is another great place to visit which offers Spanish Tapas and is located in a beautiful old rustic building which really does replicate a traditional Spanish setting. My daughter loves this place!
The estuary is one of the main feature of town so why not grab one of our paddle boards or kayaks which you can use and take them and paddle up the river to Bowcombe bridge (10 minutes) and watch the sunset over the hills. The lists are endless, just ask one of us from next door if you need any help on things to do.

Or if you fancy something more sophisticated, Dick and Wills which overlooks the water's edge is a great place to dine and watch the boats come in and out of the harbour

If you wanted something more child friendly I would go to the first beach by the car park. Both these beaches are dog friendly however they must be kept on the lead at all times.

Hope Cove

Thurlestone

Or maybe you want to relax in the Beach house restaurant overlooking the spectacular views of South Milton sands, Open for breakfast, lunch or dinner year-round. The Beach House café and takeaway specialises in freshly caught fish and seafood, which you can enjoy with a chilled glass of wine. If you do want to eat here for dinner I would recommend phoning as soon as possible as it does get booked out instantly since it's a very small restaurant. In 2021 we had the delight of a new eatery...The Rock box. It's situated overlooking the beach so has spectacular views and amazing food. They are famous for their freshly made pizzas and mouth watering burgers. I would highly recommend paying them a visit whilst you are down in the South Hams.
South Milton has an all year-round car park which is run by the National trust.

Or if you want to interact with nature travel up the hill to the National trust to Over becks and visit the gardens where there is also a great coastal walk to Hope cove from here.

The main issue that you have to watch out for this beach is the tide, as when its high tide the whole beach gets covered, so make sure you check the tide timetables which will be available in a booklet for you!

Aune valley (TQ7 4DA) is on the right hand side just before you enter Loddiswell and has a range of facilities here (All award winning!). The cafe here is one of the best things the South Hams has to offer! They offer the best breakfast's here and at lunch the Hog roast Bap... You have never tasted something quite so amazing as this. Located next door from the Cafe is Aune Valley Butchers and Shop, If you need any meat or fresh veg this is the place to go. -Their sausages are the best!
At the bottom of Loddiswell hill there is Avon mill (TQ7 4DD) which has many establishments within it such as their cafe, Unit 6 Cross fit, Moss Flowers, gift shop and The garden centre. All of these shops are lovely and really captures the heart of Devon. If you want to have a Devon cream tea then the cafe here is the place to go. Avon mill is also dog and disabled friendly and has outdoor and indoor eating which is perfect for sunny or cold days! In the centre of Loddiswell there is the local pub, The Loddiswell inn which offers great homemade food.
Loddiswell woods is one of our Favourite walks around the South Hams due to the scenery which is located within the woods. From the old ruins of a railway track, the bridges across the River Avon to the spread of Bluebells and daffodils in the spring dotted all over the woods. There are lots of different tracks you can take depending on how far you want to walk. 3.7 Miles away (10 minutes)

The Fish and Chips and the Start Bay inn are well renowned as all the fish is caught locally. The Boathouse is located next to the Start Bay inn. They serve a great fish and chips and have an amazing selection of ice cream flavours (I recommend the Biscoff flavour!) This is the perfect place to come in the summer for a day out, whether it's for a walk around Slapton sands which is located half way down the beach on the left, or swimming in the sea or sitting and have an ice-cream whilst watching the day pass.
Torcross also has a memorable feature, with the salvaged tank placed in the Carpark offering you a snippet of the past. Half way down the beach there is another memorable statue which is great to visit. At the very end of the beach there is Strete gate which has a car park, toilets and a pop up coffee van. However be careful as this end is known as the nude beach so I would advise to keep the children at the other end. Parking isn't an issue here as there are 3 carparks spread along so you will always find a space!

Torcross
Torcross is 1km long offering a range of activities, this destination is perfect for a family day out. With the range of shops, cafes and restaurants Torcross is perfect for any situation. The Fish and Chips and the Start Bay inn are well renowned as all the fish is caught locally. The Boathouse is located next to the Start Bay inn. They serve a great fish and chips and have an amazing selection of ice cream flavours (I recommend the Biscoff flavour!) This is the perfect place to come in the summer for a day out, whether it's for a walk around Slapton sands which is located half way down the beach on the left, or swimming in the sea or sitting and have an ice-cream whilst watching the day pass.

Dartmouth is situated on the banks of the picturesque River Dart, it’s the perfect year round destination for a day visit. Dartmouth has lots of great activities to offer from crossing the ferry to Kingswear, catching the steam train to Paignton, to walking to Dartmouth castle and absorbing the history of the town which dates back to 1147.
If it’s food you love, there is no better place to immerse yourself in Devon’s local produce, from seafood to ice-cream and fudge, the town is a food-lovers paradise. (just be careful of the seagulls as they are known to steal your food!) There are many great eateries located here one of our favorites is Alf Resco due to the atmosphere and the rustic setting of the cafe/ restaurant. Bula is another great coffee shop. They serve great smoothies, juices, light lunch and my favourite... Bula bowls. In the Centre of town there is the Old Market open Tuesday, Thursday (high season), Friday and Saturday providing local stalls with homemade food and crafts.
Dartmouth is also home to The Britannia Royal Navy College which brings lots of attention to this town as many Navy boats dock into Dartmouth which sometimes you can visit. If you want to indulge yourself in something more upmarket you should visit the Dart Marina which overlooks the water’s edge which provides an outstanding menu and service. If you really want to relax you should take a dip into their wellness suite and then have one of their cream teas with a glass of Prosecco whilst observing the boats go by.

Dartmouth
Dartmouth is situated on the banks of the picturesque River Dart, it’s the perfect year round destination for a day visit. Dartmouth has lots of great activities to offer from crossing the ferry to Kingswear, catching the steam train to Paignton, to walking to Dartmouth castle and absorbing the history of the town which dates back to 1147.

There are many great eateries located here one of our favorites is Alf Resco due to the atmosphere and the rustic setting of the cafe/ restaurant. Bula is another great coffee shop. They serve great smoothies, juices, light lunch and my favourite... Bula bowls. In the Centre of town there is the Old Market open Tuesday, Thursday (high season), Friday and Saturday providing local stalls with homemade food and crafts.
Dartmouth is also home to The Britannia Royal Navy College which brings lots of attention to this town as many Navy boats dock into Dartmouth which sometimes you can visit. If you want to indulge yourself in something more upmarket you should visit the Dart Marina which overlooks the water’s edge which provides an outstanding menu and service. If you really want to relax you should take a dip into their wellness suite and then have one of their cream teas with a glass of Prosecco whilst observing the boats go by.
Malborough is a small village located just before Salcombe around 10 minutes away from Kingsbridge. Soar Mill Cove Hotel (TQ7 3DS ) is a 5 minute drive from Malborough and is a great place to visit for dinner as the views are spectacular and the menu is amazing. (their Cheese Soufflé is to die for!)

On their website they have a webcam so you can check up on the weather to see whether it is worth visiting as its better to visit in the sun! Twenty- Seven is located on mill street and is joint with squeeze belly lane Cocktails in the same building. This is the perfect place to go celebrate or just to have some amazing food!
