Secrets of the South Hams

Areas of the South Hams

This little guide will provide the secrets, insights and our favourite destinations of the South Hams, so in other words this is your Bible to living here! This includes places to visit from Kingsbridge to Dartmouth and the Do's and Don'ts of staying in Devon. We have learned many tricks of the trades from living here our whole lives and would love to share them with you to maximize your experience whilst staying here!
The hometown of our rentals, Kingsbridge is the centre of the South Hams with Fore street holding the shops, bakeries and Cinema. There are many things to do here such as taking a boat trip (The Rivermaid) from the Estuary to Salcombe or visiting the Farmers market on the Quay which is held every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. There are many events held in Kingsbridge such as the Food and Music festival which is the 1st weekend in June and is held from Friday - Sunday. There is also Fair week which is normally held on the 3rd week of July, which is the best week as you get to see the whole community come together. There are many eateries in town, Our personal favourite is the Crabshell since it’s at the bottom of our hill! They offer the best pizza's around here and on a Friday night sitting in the sun on the benches with a glass of cold wine... well its Heaven! The Old Bakery is another great place to visit which offers Spanish Tapas and is located in a beautiful old rustic building which really does replicate a traditional Spanish setting. My daughter loves this place! The estuary is one of the main feature of town so why not grab one of our paddle boards or kayaks which you can use and take them and paddle up the river to Bowcombe bridge (10 minutes) and watch the sunset over the hills. The lists are endless, just ask one of us from next door if you need any help on things to do.

Salcombe is the prize possession of the South Hams due to the stunning views and atmosphere it creates. The high street offers many different outlets such as the Original Jack wills, Quba Sails, Cranches sweet shop and Henry Lloyd, offering a shop for everyone in the family. The best part of Salcombe is getting Fish and Chips from the takeaway shop and sitting on the benches on Whitestrand watching the boats go past (well it's my personal favourite). There are many things to do in Salcombe such as hiring a boat from Whitestrand Boat and hire. However from past experience these do book out very fast, so I would recommend booking up to a week in advance if your visiting in the summer holidays. You can also catch the ferry from Whitestrand to South Sands beach or go The Ferry Pub and catch the ferry to East Portlemouth beach. There are many eateries in Salcombe but if you want to experience a more local atmosphere I would go to The Fortescue inn on a Friday night, grab a homemade pizza and glass of wine since this is where all the locals go. Or if you fancy something more sophisticated, Dick and Wills which overlooks the water's edge is a great place to dine and watch the boats come in and out of the harbour Tip 1: Bring cash with you here as the cash machines NEVER have any money in them and most places only accept cash. Tip 2: Park in the Park & ride at the top of town in the summer as there are never any space left after 10am in the centre.

In the Cove there are multiple eateries such as The Hope and Anchor which offers the best Dirty Chips around the South west which is perfect to tuck into at lunch time. The Cove is another great place to eat which is smaller but is an award-winning bar and bistro which offers amazing food and has one of the best Vegan menus around the south west too. Every Friday night the cove has a live band which I definitely recommend visiting if you get the chance. A new feature to Hope Cove is the Lobster Pod Bistro which are pods located on the side of the cliff which offers a range of fresh seafood. I would recommend getting the sharing platter as its great for your money and the selection of seafood it offers is outstanding every time. There are also some great coastal walks such as Hope cove to Bantham (4 miles) or Hope Cove to Salcombe (7.5 miles) which both have spectacular views and has an amazing end destination. There are two beaches in Hope Cove, the one further away is boat friendly and does get a lot of boats visiting there. If you wanted something more child friendly I would go to the first beach by the car park. Both these beaches are dog friendly however they must be kept on the lead at all times. 5.8 miles away (20 minutes)

South Milton will offer you a long sweep of golden sands sheltered by the sand dunes in the summer. With a bay of crystal clear waters perfect for swimming and looks out over the iconic Thurlestone Rock archway surrounded by hundreds of rocks perfect for rock pooling for the little ones. This is the perfect place to come with your family on a day out as there is many activities to embellish in such as Surfin' Sams Water sports which offers services such as Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing and private tuition. Or maybe you want to relax in the Beach house restaurant overlooking the spectacular views of South Milton sands, Open for breakfast, lunch or dinner year-round. The Beach House café and takeaway specialises in freshly caught fish and seafood, which you can enjoy with a chilled glass of wine. If you do want to eat here for dinner I would recommend phoning as soon as possible as it does get booked out instantly since it's a very small restaurant. In 2021 we had the delight of a new eatery...The Rock box. It's situated overlooking the beach so has spectacular views and amazing food. They are famous for their freshly made pizzas and mouth watering burgers. I would highly recommend paying them a visit whilst you are down in the South Hams. South Milton has an all year-round car park which is run by the National trust. 3.7 miles away (15 minutes) TQ7 3JY Phone numbers The Beach house restaurant: 01548 561144

South sands is located in a small bay on the outskirts of Salcombe town. You can access this beach by car or you can catch the South Sands Ferry from Salcombe Town Centre which takes 10-15 minutes which adds a great adventure to the day as you will get a boat ride followed by a ride on the Sea tractor. There is a watersport hire company located in the old lifeboat house, offering kayak tours. The tours are perfect if you want to learn more about kayaking or just a fun day out with the family as they are suited to all abilities. Bo's beach café is also in the boat house which offers a range of take-away food and drinks throughout the day and homemade pizzas at night. If you're looking to relax back and enjoy the beach vibes, this is the place to be as there is always a good atmosphere here! However this beach is not dog friendly all year and can only have them from October – March so be careful as you can get fined in the summer. The South Sands Hotel is perfect if you want to sip on a glass of wine or eat a fresh crab sandwich whilst overlooking the beach and watching the boats go past. In 2021 we had a new hotel and beach club at South Sands. The beach club provides you with a luxurious place to dine, relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the beach. Or if you want to interact with nature travel up the hill to the National trust to Over becks and visit the gardens where there is also a great coastal walk to Hope cove from here. This is a great destination to come to if you fancy a day at the beach since there are lots of facilities to suit all your needs. From The Winking Prawn restaurant to the Ice cream van or the Beach toy truck. There are public toilets available however make sure you wear footwear in there, as believe me it does get gross in the heights of the summer! There is an onsite carpark which does fill up quickly so make sure you get there early to grab yourself a spot. This beach is also dog friendly all year so it’s a great place to walk your dogs and to bring with you to the beach in the summer. The Winking Prawn is well renowned for its BBQs in the summer which I recommend, the BBQ opens from 5pm daily, in which you can choose from a range of items from King prawns to Steak! Or if you fancy a bite to eat overlooking the beach in the morning, why not try their breakfast buffet which is amazing since it offers so many types of foods. The main issue that you have to watch out for this beach is the tide, as when its high tide the whole beach gets covered, so make sure you check the tide timetables which will be available in a booklet for you! Torcross is 1km long offering a range of activities, this destination is perfect for a family day out. With the range of shops, cafes and restaurants Torcross is perfect for any situation. The Fish and Chips and the Start Bay inn are well renowned as all the fish is caught locally. The Boathouse is located next to the Start Bay inn. They serve a great fish and chips and have an amazing selection of ice cream flavours (I recommend the Biscoff flavour!) This is the perfect place to come in the summer for a day out, whether it's for a walk around Slapton sands which is located half way down the beach on the left, or swimming in the sea or sitting and have an ice-cream whilst watching the day pass. Torcross also has a memorable feature, with the salvaged tank placed in the Carpark offering you a snippet of the past. Half way down the beach there is another memorable statue which is great to visit. At the very end of the beach there is Strete gate which has a car park, toilets and a pop up coffee van. However be careful as this end is known as the nude beach so I would advise to keep the children at the other end. Parking isn't an issue here as there are 3 carparks spread along so you will always find a space! Numbers Start bay inn: 01548 580553 The Boat House: 01548 580747 Sea Breeze: 01548 580697

Dartmouth is situated on the banks of the picturesque River Dart, it’s the perfect year round destination for a day visit. Dartmouth has lots of great activities to offer from crossing the ferry to Kingswear, catching the steam train to Paignton, to walking to Dartmouth castle and absorbing the history of the town which dates back to 1147. If it’s food you love, there is no better place to immerse yourself in Devon’s local produce, from seafood to ice-cream and fudge, the town is a food-lovers paradise. (just be careful of the seagulls as they are known to steal your food!) There are many great eateries located here one of our favorites is Alf Resco due to the atmosphere and the rustic setting of the cafe/ restaurant. Bula is another great coffee shop. They serve great smoothies, juices, light lunch and my favourite... Bula bowls. In the Centre of town there is the Old Market open Tuesday, Thursday (high season), Friday and Saturday providing local stalls with homemade food and crafts. Dartmouth is also home to The Britannia Royal Navy College which brings lots of attention to this town as many Navy boats dock into Dartmouth which sometimes you can visit. If you want to indulge yourself in something more upmarket you should visit the Dart Marina which overlooks the water’s edge which provides an outstanding menu and service. If you really want to relax you should take a dip into their wellness suite and then have one of their cream teas with a glass of Prosecco whilst observing the boats go by.

Malborough is a small village located just before Salcombe around 10 minutes away from Kingsbridge. Malborough has the town hall which holds many town theatre productions throughout the year, you can check the dates for these at the Tourist information centre on the Quay in Kingsbridge. In the centre of the town there is a Skate park and Play area for a range of ages for kids which is a great place to let them run free as it’s such a safe area. If you fancy visiting North or South sands beach in Salcombe then I would recommend using the back lanes through Malborough which are sign posted to get there as this is the quickest way. Just be careful as these are small lanes. At Soar Mill Cove (turn right at the bend of entering the town ) you will find East Soar (TQ7 3DR) which is a National Trust area, where there are many walks ranging from 1.2 miles to 4.5 miles. There is also a rustic barn cafe along the way located in East Soar Outdoor Experience which we call it a Proper Devon Cafe. Soar Mill Cove Hotel (TQ7 3DS ) is a 5 minute drive from Malborough and is a great place to visit for dinner as the views are spectacular and the menu is amazing. (their Cheese Soufflé is to die for!) Bolberry Down is a 5 minute drive from Malborough which offers Ocean Reach restaurant (TQ7 3DY) that supplies breakfast, lunch and Dinner. On their website they have a webcam so you can check up on the weather to see whether it is worth visiting as its better to visit in the sun! There are also some great coastal walks from here as well to Hope cove or Salcombe. Numbers: Soar Mill Cove Hotel : 01548 561566 Ocean’s Reach: 01548 562467 4.5 miles away (10 minutes)

East Portlemouth beaches are made up of a couple coves; Mill bay and Sunny Cove. Mill bay can be accessed by car, but it will take you a long time to drive there so it's best to use the Ferry which is located at the top of Salcombe by The Ferry pub which runs throughout the day. Sunny Cove is a bit harder as you can only access it by boat however if you have one I would recommend going there as it gets the sun all day and night and the waters are crystal clear. With these beaches you also have to take into account the tides as they do cover the beaches so check out the time tables in the booklet! On mill bay there is a Venus Café at the top which serves takeaway food, drinks and supplies of beach toys. There is also a public toilet available too. If visiting this beach, you do have to be careful when swimming as there are hundreds of boats, so you can't go out deep as the boat lane is close. If you aren't a beach fan then there is a great coastal walk from East Portlemouth to Gara rock (4 miles) where you will find a café at the end which serves great cream teas. 10.5 miles away (30 minutes)

Our recommendations for the area plus a list of all restaurants and take away numbers which can be found on the bottom Kingsbridge section.
Located at the bottom of our hill is The Crabshell, this is one of the best places to eat in Kingsbridge. One being its at the bottom of the hill so not too far to walk! and secondly the location is spectacular. Located on the watersides edge, The Crabshell offers bench seating and a sun terrace which is great on a summers day sipping a Gin & Tonic watching the boats go by. The Crabshell gets the sun all evening which is why we love it! The Crabshell is family friendly so this is the perfect place to suit all family members. If you fancied tapas The Old bakery is perfect which is set back in a rustic style restaurant on the Promenade. This Spanish themed restaurant offers amazing food and the service is always amazing. If you wanted to eat here I would defiantly recommend to book as it is quite small so can book up quickly! Twenty- Seven by Jamie Rodgers is a fine dining restaurant serving outstanding food. If you like Fine Dining then this is the place to go, Jamie is an award winning chef and creates spectacular creations all the time. Twenty- Seven is located on mill street and is joint with squeeze belly lane Cocktails in the same building. This is the perfect place to go celebrate or just to have some amazing food!

In Salcombe there are many great places to eat from The Ferry inn, located at the top of town and by the waters edge. The Ferry Inn is family friendly and a great place to go to sit in the beer garden sipping on a glass of wine watching all the activity on the water. The Fortesuce Inn is another great pub that serves great food as is renowned for their homemade pizzas. We always go here in the summer and order a takeaway pizza and then sit on one of the benches across from it by the water and enjoy the summers evening. If you fancied a more sophisticated meal then I would recommend Dick & Wills. They serve amazing food and the offer fresh fish daily, their muscles are defiantly the best in Salcombe! Most cases this does require booking as its located in one of the best spots in Salcombe overlooking the water so I would always book in advance if you wanted to eat here. If you wanted something more family friendly The Island Street Bar and Grill located near the car park and is a great place for families as they offer a more chilled menus serving burgers, grills and salads. If you are going in the Summer I would defiantly book as this is one of the most popular places to eat in Salcombe due to the location and friendly team at the restaurant.

There are only a few places to eat in Hope Cove but they are all amazing! The Cove offers a wide range of options on their menu to suit all needs, The Cove has won many awards and one of their main selling points is that all produce is local. It has also one of the largest cider menus around which is perfect on a summers evening sitting on their terrace enjoying the sun. The Cove doesn't have booking as its based on first come basis. The Lobster pods offers an amazing eating experience as you are sat in glass pods overlooking Hope Cove Beach. This fish restaurant serves locally caught fish and has an amazing reputation! I would 100% recommend their fish platter as you get a large range of fish and the price is amazing for what you receive! If you want to eat here I would book as it gets so busy here as there is only 12 pods so can fill up quickly!

Thurlestone is a small village however the Village Inn restaurant which is in combination with the Thurlestone Hotel, is one of the best traditional pubs. The Village Inn has something for every appetite on the menu. Take your pick between fresh local seafood, vegetarian specials and delicious slow-cooked meats, accompanied by excellent craft beers and ciders. There is plenty of seating here so normally it is fine not to book but if there is a larger group then I would book in advance.
