The Monsal Trail is just on your doorstep and a wonderful way to explore the immediate area or join up other routes to get to know the wider area. It is approx 8 miles in length, traffic free and offers stunning views from start to finish. Along the way in which ever direction are places of interest, with Bakewell and (close to) Buxton at either end. Sadly Buxton doesn't quite link up to the trail yet. Pubs and cafes along the way make it a great place for either a quick evening walk or a full day's exploring. (See links for Hassop Station (Cafe and bike hire) and Miller's Dale stations (cafe and car park)

Haddon Hall is probably the finest example of a fortified medieval manor house in existence. Present-day Haddon Hall dates from the 12th Century to the early 17th Century, whereupon it lay dormant for over two hundred years from 1700 until the 1920s, when the 9th Duke and Duchess of Rutland restored the house and gardens, and once again made it habitable. A great place to visit on rainy days. Haddon seems to be constantly in demand as a film and television location. Most recently it has been the location for the 2011 film version of Jane Eyre, starring Mia Wasikowska and directed by Cary Fukunaga. Franco Zefferelli and the BBC have also filmed versions of Jane Eyre here. One of the earliest films based at Haddon tells the romantic story of John Manners and Dorothy Vernon, Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall, starring Mary Pickford. Whilst not filmed at Haddon, the interiors appear to have been inspiration for the set designs. Haddon has also played cameo roles in Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, and The Other Boleyn Girl featuring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. A favourite film amongst our visitors in the know is The Princess Bride, where Haddon was the location for Prince Humperdinck's castle.

A delight to visit. A beautiful walk from the cottage, through two tunnels. (Look out for the glorious views between the tunnels down to Water-cum-jolly and the river Wye below you. Best viewed from above (Walk up to the Monsal Head pub) or beneath (from the footbridge that leads down to the River Wye). If walking beneath, you may want to carry on the weir 0.5 miles along the river- great place for a picnic and photos. Or walk up to Monsal Head for an icecream or lunch at the Monsal Head walkers bar.

Food Scene

So much to recommend in this gem of a place. Buxton Fringe in the Summer, Buxton Opera House all year round. The Buxton Tap near the centre of town is great for a wide range of real ales and ciders- they have a menu of ales!!. What's not to like. Buxton has an easy train link to Manchester and possible to get cycles on the train. (Check with local station on any restrictions). Supermarkets and good restaurants.

A wonderful but hilly walk (about 5 miles) to the pub in Chelmorton. Great food and beer. Friendly staff. The walk starts along the Monsal trail towards Buxton (past Millers Dale station) then heads South along the Pennine Bridleway and the Limestone way to Chelmorton. Lots of history and glorious scenery as part of a big day out. (Or drive out for a great lunch/ evening meal). Highest Church, historic water systems, ancient burial chamber. Beautiful and memorable walk.

A glorious walk - fairly uneven in places - accessed along the Monsal Trail. Walk past Millers Dale station to the abseiling bridge. Take the right hand path down to the river. About an hour’s walk - take good walking boots. Walk in a big loop back up to the Monsal Trail.
