Traveling to Nantucket

Getting from Boston or NY to Nantucket can be unnecessarily expensive by plane. We often go from Logan to Hyannis on the bus, and then take the slow ferry to the island. Its a long day, but not fraught with starvation or steep roads.
Terminal C has a bus stop just past baggage claim, door C110. All bus lines leave from there whether its Peter Pan or Plymouth Brockton. The South Station shuttle stops there as well. I suspect that there are similar bus stops in other terminals but double check.

When you catch a bus at Logan, their first stop is often South Station. If you are traveling on by bus after Nantucket, you will catch your next bus there. We usually use Peter Pan Bus Lines to get to Hyannis and the ferries. Their app is easy to use and buses run all the time. Always keep in mind the ferry schedule at the other end; in the summer ferries run often, but not all night. Buy your ticket from Logan to Hyannis ($24ish). The link goes to Peter Pan, but Plymouth-Brockton is just as good and the bus lines' schedules are staggered.

The bus will drop you at a pleasant bus terminal in Hyannis. There is travel info available there and it is busy. Head out through the main EXIT doors and walk down the gentle slope .5 mile/8km to the ferry dock. If you have time there are places on the way for a big breakfast at the top of the walk, or a great tourist chowder down by the ferries. If you come in very late into Hyannis and need to get to your nights rest, keep in mind that some of the population of Hyannis is having a rough time and parts aren't the loveliest. Have a plan if you need to catch a ride from the bus station to your destination.

As you walk out of the bus station, on the left across the road you will see the bright and pretty sign for Persy' Place. Its a great breakfast place that makes delish home fries.

There are two ferry companies operating out of Hyannis to Nantucket: The HyLine, and the Steamship Authority. The HyLine and the SA both have a fast ferry which gets you there in an hour, the SA also has the slow boat which takes two hours and takes cars. The fast ferry cost $38.50 one way. The slow boat is $18.50 one way, bikes are $7 additional, cars expensive and very possibly not worth it. We have always used the slow ferry. Playing cards is traditional, bikes are easy, pets are no problem, chowder is good, and Cisco beer is on tap. If you are lucky you can get a booth and a nap. I'm sure its the same on the fast ferry, but its filled with tourists.

The slow boat drops you on the docks of Nantucket. Its small and busy and you want to follow the crowd to the far side to get any luggage you put on the cart. You can grab a cab right there, please no Uber/Lyft use on the island, and head to the house. Call Doralee's Cab 508 221-0855, and they will know exactly where to go, but any proper cab company will be readily available by the luggage cart and elsewhere, and can get you where you need to go. Nantucket cabs dont mind pets and piling in all in a heap.

If you need to rent bikes, trailers, or gear, follow the smell of pizza and waffle cones to the beginning of Broad St immediately after the docks cease. Youngs Bicycle, and Nantucket Bike have always been there and we have used both over the decades. The bike is the best way to get around if you are able. It can get you into town faster than a car, and there are plenty of beaches in a flat 2-4 miles to choose from. You have even more choices if you like to bike. I would highly recommend the Burley cargo trailer for big grocery runs, and to carry beach gear. Snag a kid carrier if there aren't any available. There are panniers at the house you may use if you travel minimally.

If you are up for a quick grocery shop, the Stop & Shop is a block or two from where you disembarked the Steamship Authority. If you took the HyLine, you are right there. Grab the essentials before you head to the house. Tea is probably there, but coffee probably not. Remember that grocery stores in Massachusetts don't sell alcohol, and you must go to a liquor store to purchase it. Fresh on Salem St., or Murray's on Main St. will take care of you in town. When in town, we have found that going to this Stop and Shop is very easy to use. I wouldn't use it as my first choice of grocery stores unless I was already in town, or biking in. Traffic is atrocious and driving into town is often counter productive.

This is Main St. You made it. Follow your directions to the house or strike out on your own. If you are an early riser, Town is beautiful in the early morning. Remember at some point in your visit to get off Main St. and follow your way down all the pretty alleys and hidden cobblestone streets.
