Nearby restaurants

These are all about a half mile from the house. It's a pleasant walk through a broad street with flowering trees lining the middle.
This is a great place with good food and a full bar that is a favorite for brunch or a light dinner when we don't feel like driving. It is about a half mile walk down a beautiful neighborhood street.

Another neighborhood restaurant in walking distance. It has basic Mexican food and $5 margaritas on Wednesdays and Sundays!

Some people say this is the best fried chicken in town. I don't know about that (I'm a vegetarian), but the cole slaw is hands down the best!

A good, reasonably priced restaurant. We usually pick it up and bring it home, and it is a really good lunch spot. A good place to put the order in and pick it up on the way back to the house when you are good and tired.

Durty Nelly's is dark and a bit grungy. It is THE neighborhood bar. They have live music and you can sit outside in an area that was roped off of the parking lot. The friendliest staff in town, and great local beer on tap.

Restaurants to drive to

Charlottesville is a totally foodie town. There are restaurants to make everyone happy.
Our favorite special occasion restaurant. You can branch out and have the shaved brussel sprout and kale salad, or whatever trendy thing is on special, but we always go back to the eggplant parmesan and the ravioli. The best part of it is the outside patio--terraced and hung with fairy lights. My traveling friends say it is like their favorite restaurant in Florence.

A kid I went to high school with returned from Louisiana and opened this one. I really like the po'boys!

Just walk up and down, listen to the music, and choose a place to eat. I love eating outside in the warm weather, or to sit back and enjoy a beer and watch the folks go by. It is 8 blocks of restaurants and shops, with music venues and buskers along the way.

Wineries

We don't go often, but we do have our favorites.

I don't think I have ever been inside! We go in spring, summer, and fall. We sit outside on the veranda and eat the appetizer plate with cheese and fruit, drink some red wine, and look at the magnificent view. It is really beautiful.

Cardinal Point is right off 151, which is the road with all the breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Sit on the porch facing the rows of grapes, and drink the Cabernet Franc. Nice way to spend the afternoon!

Kid's Stuff

I grew up here and raised my 3 kids here. Now my grandkids visit from time to time. We can usually find lots of stuff to do to keep them off the screens!
A great place to take the kids on a rainy day, or a sunny day! We used to grab the trolley (the free bus to downtown) and ride to the pedestrian mall. The museum is at the east end of the mall. We would walk around the mall, go to the museum, and then eat at one of the kid friendly restaurants around there. Or buy something at the little market next door and sit and have a bit of a picnic. By the time you walk back from the trolley stop, the kids are good and tired.

This is a short but challenging hike straight up the mountain to absolutely gorgeous views. At the bottom of the mountain is a visitor's center with an old farm that my kids always loved to explore. One of my kids was absolutely fearless and always made me feel weak in the knees when we went up there. Make sure your kids have a healthy respect for heights!

When I was a kid, we would throw the canoe on the top of the car, grab a bucket of Wayside chicken, head on down to the James River outside of Scottsville where we would spend the day floating down the river. Now, the James River Runners have taken over the run, and they rent out canoes and tubes and drive you to the drop site, and you float back. It's a lot more expensive than our little outings, and a lot more crowded, but still a fun time. Especially if you go during the week.
