Maboneng Precinct

Maboneng has brought new light to the city. It’s the best place to experience unique cafe's and restaurants, exciting nightlife and one-of-a-kind shopping. Take an afternoon or two to experience the neighbourhood and get to know a new Jozi.
This multi-use facility was once a series of dilapidated buildings that have been renovated, connected and turned into an atrium of smaller galleries, shops, and cafés. Come by around brunch time on a Sunday when the food market is set up.

This hole-in-the-wall eatery serves up generous portions of spicy Ethiopian food. If you’re feeling brave, go for the minchet beef—it’s smothered in a peri-peri sauce so hot that even the most seasoned heat lovers might break a sweat.

A rooftop eco-cafe, serving a range of salads, mezze platters and other light fare. The Living Room is the ideal spot to grab lunch or perch out for an afternoon. With some of the best views of Jozi’s skyline you’ll probably want to linger over a drink here until the sun sets over the city.

Marabi is the name for the urban culture that emerged from the slum yards of 1920s and 1930s. The historic area in which The Marabi Club is located is the original home of Marabi and located in the basement of Maboneng’s Hallmark House boutique hotel, designed by star Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye.

UBER is the best way to get around

The most convenient way to get around the city and between the airport is via UBER. They will show the collection point on the app and a ride is usually only two minutes away. If you are using a rental vehicle, I recommend the WAZE NAVIGATION app for the best routes around the city and to avoid traffic congestion.

Safety in Maboneng

STREET SMART I don't consider Jo'burg a walking city and it isn't safe to walk outside of large tour groups to places like Braamfontein, New Town, Park Station or the Carlton Centre. It is absolutely safe to walk around public areas in neighborhoods like Maboneng, Parkhurst, Melville, Rosebank and Soweto. Carry valuable items close to your body (not in a backpack) when exploring the contrasts of the city and leave your passport, some cash, and an extra bank card at the property.
