Beaches

One of the most beautiful beaches around. Shady and sandy which is a rare find. Driving out of Puako toward the highway, turn left when you come to the intersection at the dump on to Old Puako Road. Drive that road (which is windy and narrow so look out for oncoming traffic) for approximately 3/4 mile. Turn left at the SECOND paved road with yellow gate. You will see the parking lot. Sign on the right says Hapuna State Recreation Area, Waialea Beach. Walk to the water and enjoy. This is a conservation area so take your snorkels, not your fishing spears.

Hapuna makes a strong case for being one of the "worlds best beaches" possessing all the traits that vacationers love. The beach is wide and long, stretching for several hundred yards and offers plenty of play room with fine soft sand. The clear water offers excellent snorkeling towards the rocky south point when the ocean is calm. Skilled swimmers can snorkel almost a mile down the coast to reach the beautiful Wailea Bay. When the surf picks up Hapuna often serves up some excellent boogie boarding.

This is one of the best beaches around.. Due to the fact that there are limited parking spots for the non-hotel staying public (around 30 spots), it’s best you arrive early because once the spots are full, you’ll have to wait for someone to leave. If parking is unavailable, Hapuna Beach is just one mile south. However, if you’re determined to visit this beach, you should arrive before 9:00 in the morning. Once you get your parking spot, it’s about a 5-minute walk from the parking area to the beach down a paved path.

Mauna Kea Golf Course tops the list because of its incredible ocean vistas and great Robert Trent Jones Sr. design. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player hit the first shots here in 1963 on the signature hole, the breathtaking par-3 third that can play as long as 272 yards over a section of the deep blue Pacific.

Blue Dragon Tavern & Cosmic Musiquarium is another sustainable initiative by 1Heart HUB, a Kohala-based business with a social purpose to support local farming & foods, the arts, community & culture and education. The original Blue Dragon Restaurant enjoyed eight years as a premiere coastal locale! Island residents and visitors gathered to listen and dance to eclectic live music and enjoy ultra-fresh coastal cuisine. At peak popularity in late 2016, we closed our beloved Dragon to address wastewater issues. Three years later in Sept. 2019, the Dragon reopened with renewed commitment to island artists, musicians and local farmers under a new name: Blue Dragon Tavern & Cosmic Musiquarium.

Our family owned farm is located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Sunny mornings, rainy afternoons, and the rich volcanic soil makes for some very happy and healthy trees. With over 100 acres of coffee trees, we are happy to be able to serve you all of our own coffee. We hand pick all of the ripe coffee cherry to give you the smoothest and best tasting cup possible. Since all of the cherries do not ripen at the same time, each tree will be picked several times throughout the season to ensure we get only the ripe cherry. After the coffee is pulped and washed thoroughly, it is naturally sun-dried on our large deck and raked regularly.

Created for Newsweek magazine back in the 60’s The Mauna Kea Hawaiian Lū‘au completes the experience with a taste of culture shared by means of music, food and family tradition on the Big Island.
What’s not to like about the Legends of Hawaii Luau at the Hilton Waikoloa Village? The show tells the stories of some of Hawaii’s most incredible legends and people through mele (song) and hula. Though a bit pricey, it’s worth considering buying Alii seats, which gets you early entry, an open bar, great service and amazing show seats. A favorite among locals and tourists alike, one of the other fun aspects about the Legends of Hawaii Luau is that attendees get an opportunity to visit with the dancers once the luau is over, and even take photos with them, paving the way for wonderful memories and a beautiful keepsake!

The northeastern side of the Big Island is lush and tropical thanks to a combination of the high volcanoes, constant trade winds, and tropical temperatures. The Hilo and Hamakua coast are filled with rainforest, waterfalls, and tropical flowers and these natural treasures can be most easily seen in one of the botanical gardens on the Big Island.

Kohala Divers is 15 minutes from Puako located at Kawaihae Harbor Shopping Center. They have wonderful dive charters, instruction, rental & retail and new dive boat, Nakaka. At Kohala Divers we keep our groups small and our profiles flexible. We like to get to know our divers and cater the trip to your abilities and interests. We encourage divers to slow down, relax, get neutral and let the dive unfold. Mellow breathing allows you to hear dolphin clicks as they pass overhead and Humpback whale songs surrounding you in winter. A slow pace brings your awareness to the hidden, tiny critters while not scaring away the fish and larger turtles, sharks and rays. The feeling above and below the water is never rushed and always fun!

One of the most famous snorkeling and kayaking areas in the world lies about 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona in Kealakekua Bay. Best known for its historical significance as the first European landing site in Hawaii in 1779 as well as the site of interactions between the two cultures and the untimely death of English Explorer, Captain James Cook. A visit to Kealakekua Bay offers a bit of an educational experience as well as being an incredible location for water activities. From Palemano Point to Cook Point, Kaealakekua Bay is the largest natural bay on the Big Island, it’s 315 acres, measure around 1.5 miles by 1 mile. Its waters were designated as a Marine Life Conservation District in 1969 because of its abundance and diversity of marine life. The snorkeling area around the monument is inaccessible by car, but you have several options to tour Kealakekua Bay: boat tour, guided kayak tour or a steep hike into this historical and protected area.

Round Trip 4 Miles This very secluded sand beach is located near Ka Lae (South Point)in the Kau district of Hawaii. The hike is a rugged 2-mile dusty labyrinth of ruts that eventually lead to the beach. Getting down to the beach is an entirely different issue. Shaped like a giant bowl, you have to climb down the side of the "bowl" to reach the beach. Braving the rugged road down, you might be tempted to ask yourself if it's really worth the trip. The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. One word of caution- do not swim here as the waters are very turbulent.

Round Trip 1/2 mile This short hike follows a paved trail that travels to both 'Akaka Falls and Kahūnā Falls through lush upcountry rainforest. The overview spot for 442 foot tall 'Akaka Falls is very picturesque and the views are expansive, but it's much more difficult to see 100 foot tall Kahūnā Falls from its overlook through the forest. The best time to visit this popular park is on a weekday, between about 9am and 11am. You'll probably beat the tour buses and the sun is high enough to illuminate the entire 'Akaka Falls. Bring your cameras when you visit Akaka and Kahuna Falls, two impressive Hawaiian waterfalls. Akaka Falls State Park is 20 minutes before Hilo, which takes you through the Big Island’s old sugar-cane fields. At the park, you will take a self-guided, 0.4 mile hike through dense tropical vegetation to see these two towering Hawaiian waterfalls. The hike features a shady, half-hour walk along a paved path fragrant with tropical flowers and vines. We suggest you first visit Kahuna Falls, the lesser of the two waterfalls at 400 ft. This amazing waterfall only whets your appetite for the majestic Akaka Falls, which drops 442 ft. in to a pool of water below.
