To See, Do & Eat around Chy Bian

The best of what's on offer in the local area
The Telegraph's Lesley Gillan rates Falmouth's The Star & Garter saying: "From coffee to cocktails you could spend all day here – good food is what the Star & Garter is all about. Featuring home-smoked meats, fresh local seafood and classics with an S&G twist, the menu offers lunch-time sharing plates (crispy sardines, fennel salami, duck salt chips), robust dinners (hake with ember-cooked leeks, venison with crown prince squash, char-grilled pheasant, custard tart with quince paste), and a glorious Sunday roast, all washed down with Cornish wines and local ales". Modern British food using fresh local produce. Great views of Falmouth harbour from the restaurant too! Booking essential. £££

Ros Belford's Telegraph review of the St Mawes Hotel said that it's "Guilt-free hedonism, helped along by the gin cocktail hour kicking off at 4pm. Bare boards, wooden tables, chalkboards and nautical paraphernalia give the bar the feel of a French bistro – while the upstairs lounge and dining room, with French windows opening onto a long balcony overlooking the bay, is more hygge, with open fire, soft lighting, gorgeously upholstered (and supremely comfortable) sofas, kilims, bookshelves, and a glorious collection of French enamelware on a distressed petrol blue dresser". Treat yourself to a day trip and modern British cuisine in an elegant boutique hotel with view across the stunning St Mawes bay. Booking essential, and we recommend taking the ferry from Falmouth to add that special something. ££££

The Ferry Boat Inn dates back 300 years and is situated in the North Helford Passage on the waterfront. It is worth rising early to visit the bustling Fish Market and to see the fish being sold. The fish is displayed in coloured rectangular baskets and ticketed awaiting auction. First impressions of Holywell Bay can be deceptive as the main beach is obscured by sand dunes as you approach. It is only upon scaling or walking around these dunes that the expanse of golden sand stretching almost a mile to the north-east becomes apparent. Holywell is a familiar site - a oft used location for the BBC series Poldark.

Porthkidney Sands is a north-facing beach at the mouth of the Hayle Estuary that lies just two miles from the picturesque harbour town of St Ives, West Cornwall. Porthkidney is a vast expanse of sands, facing Hayle Towans to the east of the estuary. At low tide the beach can stretch almost a mile out to sea. The beach is backed by picturesque sand dunes. West Cornwall Golf Club overlooks the beach. The neighbouring beach of Carbis Bay, which sits the other side of the Hawks Point headland, is a short walk along the South West Coast Path, which then proceeds to St Ives.
