Food Scene

All Places listed here have their biggest Pro's highlighted in our opinion ... It is up to you to see what suits your taste and expectation... We hope you will enjoy every bite ;-)
After living in Los Angeles for 13 years, we did not think that we will find this gem of an ethnic food place here on the B.I. This INDIAN food is very tasty and can rival with any authentic restaurant I've been to. *I personally love indian food, the hotter the better but also lots of authentic spices from those regions.

This is my go-to place for a Mai-Tai on the beach, after 3pm is usually happy hour and you can lay on a lounge chair to the side of the restaurant and just take in the beauty of this island. The food offers Lunch and Dinner, different menus. The restaurant is airy and sports bar like with a very casual approach, however the quality of the food is among the better. TIP: Bring a bathing suit (as usual in Hawaii) you can go swimming before or after in the A-Bay. Also here in the Waikoloa Beach Resort are the Kings and Queens Marketplace, where you can do some island-style shopping...

If you have an occasion to celebrate, you may want to make a reservation in the Four Seasons Resort at the Beach Tree Restaurant. The service is second to none in the category of resort restaurants world wide. The Food is either lunch or dinner but they also have an all-day Lounge ( open from 11.30-10pm). At dinner the Restaurant serves an Italian cuisine that is composed of 75% island ingredients and most of the cheeses, flour, charcuterie and wines imported all the way from Italy. I know that Chef de Cuisine is Italian every experience is memorable there. Due to the 5-Star quality, the prices are accordingly.

An authentic cafe/coffee shop with a spectacular view, right off of the Mamalahoa Hwy. ! I love to go there in the very early afternoon (they close at 2.30 PM) have a piece of coconut cream Pie, some Kona Coffee (iced) and proceed to "2 step Beach for some world class snorkeling. Another big highlight is that they have a bakery attached and make all their own breads for sandwiches, etc.

People from all over flock here for whats often crowned as the best dinner restaurant on the island! Among locals as well as tourists, if you are looking for a place that meets your high quality expectations, you should give them a shot. No ocean view, but maybe one evening you can make an exception ;-)

This place consistently has a good variety of different local Fish dishes, it's not cheap but the food and drinks are good and you can't beat the location and view. I recommend to swing over to "Chillin' on the Bay" or "Gertrude's" for some after dinner fun.

We went here the other day for a birthday. The food is upscale, the wine-list is interesting, professional service, the view is in my opinion the best "sea-view" in Hilo (and one of the few) I recommend to go here if you make the meal the event i.e. Occasion or lazy day. It is our favorite restaurant in Hilo, hands down.

Great Food ( go for innovative, Hawaiian-inspired local-style favorites), friendly service, located in the very sleepy village of Pahoa away from the bigger cities like Hilo, close to Kapoho, Kalapana and even Volcano. They do have live entertainment nightly!

This is a bit more a spot where you will see some locals- The highlight is the Koi pond with even a tortuous in it, the water is so clear that it looks like the fish are hanging mid air. Ask for a window seat/table, you will be able to see that. Also, especially on weekends you will see many local kids and teenagers do water sports, families picnicing in the distance, etc. The food is island inspired but has tons of American favors.

Great Coffee Farm that you can visit at 3200 ft elevation it is one of the highest. It has a cute gift shop and several tours to learn about how they process the coffee. It is a welcome break from the hot temperatures, usually it is a good 15 degrees cooler up there...

I have the BBQ Jackfruit wrap every time I go. I love the flavor... but they also have chicken, beef and so on to put into warps, plates, quesadillas.... Fresh made pasta here in Hawaii !!! That's really all I need to say for this one We recommend for you to make a reservation through "opentable" however lanai seating is first come first serve and it is worth waiting for it - we waited the last time at the bar and had a cocktail ! This is my go-to coffee shop when we are heading north for a beach day. Ask for the "Firecracker Mocha" it is a mocha with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. I like to add an "add shot Espresso" and ask for whipped cream on top - of course I take it iced. On a side note, they have some fun souvenirs (not cheap).

Fresh - Local - From Scratch This place takes pride in what they put on the plate. Besides stunning views of the bay, you can indulge in foods that the island has to offer like local beef, fish, pork and of course all the many kinds of locally grown veggies. It's a good place to make a reservation and also to go there for an occasion like a birthday or anniversary.

Currently one of the HOTTEST places to go for lunch or dinner, it will be crowded - but, for a good reason : The food is phenomenal (fried, rich and spicy local cuisine), the Service is very engaged and most importantly humble and friendly in my experiences! Always love to go here and have some great tasting snacks with a locally brewed micro-brew. It has a great outside lanai and also the inside has a very cool charm. I think I had probably one of my favorite burgers here ... I would combine a visit here on a Saturday when I visit the numerous farmers markets in Waimea.

You need a reservation. The service is phenomenal, the place has 3 tables. The food quality is best, they have nice sake and the husband and wife team are very fun. This is a very hard place to get in but it's centrally located, we usually have a drink at Chiki Tiki next door before we go in and have our "Omakase" dinner. Gotta tell them at the reservation that you want omakase. (if you do, otherwise a la carte is also great)

Only open for lunch at this point. Can be pricy. But the food quality is unmatched, fresh and tasty. The owners are a team that serves and cooks. Sometimes service can be slow. But it is an experience you don't want to miss if you have time and money.

One of my -'in town' favorites, the food is great (especially the pizza) the view is spectacular (probably the closest you can sit by the ocean in Kona) the service is usually great. The prices are not cheap but you are getting Bang for your Buck. Lot's of beers on tap, live music like at most Kona eateries. Would be high on my list if you ask me.

6 days a week this sort of touristy farmers market opens (Monday's closed). You can get your sure fill of Papayas, Pineapple, Bananas and seasonal items like Lycée, Guava and so on... Souvenirs are sold here, a lot of them also island-made. A lot of times my schedule doesn't allow for me to buy fruit at the once a week farmers markets and in those cases I get a good part of my fruits here. TIP: There is 2 parking lots, one of them is FREE, the other is pretty expensive, make sure that when you come on Ali'i Drive, you turn into Hualalai Rd. and take the second parking lot on the Farmer's Market side, that's free all day - you can also use this lot if you are going to check out the Ali'i Shops down the way, it's pretty central.

Essentials

This is where you find Supermarkets, Gas Stations, pharmacy etc.
KTA is the first and original Hawaiian store that has a great selection of organic but also diverse products. Veggies and Fruit from the island is available here as well as grass fed beef from the north and fish from our local fisher men... the Poke is never frozen (unlike the competitive grocery stores do) A friend of mine is a hobby fisher and he has a license to give his fish to commercial use, when he catches a large fish like an Ahi Tuna or a big Ono, he sells it to KTA... I shop here to get great product and to support my Island-economy :-)

Drinks & Nightlife

What to do after dinner ? Maybe here you find a Pub or a restaurant where you can enjoy a drink and some atmosphere - Kona has options but is not known to be the biggest on night-life
In my opinion an iconic and "must-go Place", mostly because the Kona Brewing Company is making a variety of high quality Island Brews that also are popular on the mainland. There is no view here so I recommend to go after sunset ;-) Make sure to make a reservation, so you don't have to wait a long time as this is a busy place.

Sightseeing

This Coffee Farm has it all, great coffee, an interesting story but most of all a stunning and unique view over Kailua Kona from about 1600 ft. The Tour is informative and fun, you will learn a lot of information about how coffee comes from a tiny plant to a mature tree, then gets harvested, processed and all the different things you could do to it... Coffee farms like this one always have a great souvenir mart for some special gifts ...

There is different options for you to get here and it depends of what you like to do. You can hike, kayak and also charter a boat. The real attraction here is for me that the snorkeling is absolutely stunning and with probably one of the highest chances on dolphins the bay is a favorite spot for ocean-life explorers.

There is different options for you to get here and it depends of what you like to do. You can hike, kayak and also charter a boat. The real attraction here is for me that the snorkeling is absolutely stunning and with probably one of the highest chances on dolphins the bay is a favorite spot for ocean-life explorers.
This is the Museum inside the National Park. From here you can see into the crater on a good day. Otherwise there is explanations in pictures and videos etc. on how the volcanos work.

This is where you go to learn about the Mauna Kea. If the streets allow, you can continue to drive up but be aware, a strong car and 4-wheel drive is required for a fun experience. Keep in mind that this is a very tall mountain and the air up there is thin, there are certain people, that should no go up there because it is not healthy for them. Sunset, Sunrise are probably the best events to witness up there- it's pretty unique. In the winter the mountain sometimes has snow on it and some Hawaiians like to visit up there and take a cooler full of snow to the beach to cool a nice island-brew... it's just a fun thing to do: Snow and a tropical beach in one day :-)

Connecting Hawi to Waimea, this Highway goes high up on the Kohala Mountain and the views are absolutely astonishing, seeing the vast valley along the Kohala coast line where the resorts are lined up. The drive itself if windy and the immediate scenery reminds you more of lush pastures in Wisconsin sprinkled with livestock. We recommend this drive maybe in combination to connect 2 different attractions .

This is a Luau, that is very well organized, the food is authentic and most of all the dancers are fun! It is just down the hill, no more than 10 minutes drive from the rental. It feels touristy but I believe all lu'aus do ... The price is in the middle range. I've been here twice and had a fun every time.

This is a unique business park where water from 3000 ft below the ocean surface gets pumped up and businesses unique to this resource build their research or business. Seahorse Far, Octopus Farm, "Kona Deep" water plant, Kona cold Lobster, Oyster farms, Abalone Farm, Spirulina Farm and Monk seal sanctuary are just a few of the businesses that are exciting to find out more about - or pick up dinner :-)

It is here where the locals will go for a great massage. It is open for 7 days a week and can often accommodate your multiple massage requests so you don't have to waste any time waiting for your partner to finish their treatment. The facials are done by a true professional here. She has trained in a huge variety of luxury hotel spas as well as day spas and plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills.

Want to ride on a horse back to a remote waterfall ? Well they do this here! :-) On the way you will ride through streams, and the iconic Waipi'o Valley will peacefully present itself to you :-) ... I recommend the morning ride as the temperatures will be more pleasant. It's a fun trip to go down there, as the you will witness the climate change more than once on the way there. On the way back, I recommend to swing in to Waimea for different extraordinary lunch options. Keep in mind that getting there will take you about 2 hours from Kona.

Kua Bay is consistently the most popular beach here near Kona. It is in an area, where usually only few clouds come. It is a sand beach in the summer, great for swimming, body surfing, tanning, beach games and even on the rocky side is some decent snorkeling even though this beach is not known to be a snorkel beach. Tip: the sunsets here are extra beautiful. In the winter time it is not the best beach for a sand beach experience as the large and rough waves take the sand away but the whales like to hang out out side of the bay!

This is a great beginner snorkel spot here, pretty close to the Harbor View Hale. There is always a bunch of people but the reef is pretty safe during most conditions and there are many different fish see. TIP: If you do not have all the equipment you need, here you can rent it at the beach. To the side is also a famous beginner surfing spot. Most of the time there will be surf schools teaching.

Green Sands Beach there is 2 ways to get to it: 1 you pay a local, that usually hangs out at the trailhead to give you a ride or you own or rent a 4-wheel drive truck, but beware the terrain is more than advanced and in addition to that, there is a sign, warning that you are supposed to hike the path, and vehicles are forbidden. I once saw people hiking the whole way and in the heat and wind that looked like a long 5.3 miles roundtrip. What ever way you choose to go there, once you get there, you will experience, in my opinion, one of the most impressive sights here on the island. Plan to swim, however with caution as there are no lifeguards. Keep in mind that taking lava stones from the island of Hawaii will earn you the wrath and misfortune of Pele.

Akaka Falls State Park is located 11 miles north of Hilo along the old Mamalahoa highway. The 422 foot waterfall is stunning and certainly worth the drive up the slopes of Mauna Kea’s east side. Once you arrive it is a $1.00 per person entry fee and locals are Free. There is a half mile loop trail that is paved and has handrails. You will walk through rain forest and over streams before arriving at this magnificent water feature. Kahūnā Falls is located just down stream from Akaka Falls and is just as picturesque. Guava and passionfruit do grow wild along the trail, however it is not recommended that you eat the fruit off the ground. Because it is in the rainforest, be prepared for rain as it rains throughout the day quite often. There is restrooms next to the parking lot. Enjoy this Hawaiian beauty and remember Take only Pictures and Leave only Footprints.

This is truly a locals secret. There are so many turtles and the "Queens bath" is a unique experience as well. The Drive down into Kiholo Bay is simple (between mile markers #82 and #81), just fine for any rental car (2 wheel drives included), just a few minutes off the highway with a turn around at the bottom (just steps from the beach) and lots of parking along the side. A home reported to have been Loretta Lynn's is off to the left (in the camping area) and worth checking out as well. Just an easy stroll down the beach (to the North) will take you to the Queen's Bath, just off into the woods, by a few feet, from the beach. These two pools (connected but with 2 openings) have a big ladder for easy entry into the freshwater pools that are due both to rainwater and springs but be careful if you jump in as they are only 4 feet dep or so, rising and lowering slightly with the tides. A refreshing dip (it's a little colder than the ocean) and the freshwater is a terrific spot to get that saltwater off of you after swimming with the turtles - and there are loads of them in this area, many near the shoreline and easy to spot as they feed on the algae that grows on these rocks plus we've seen many of them up on the sun, just hangin'. Remembr the rules and don't harm or frighten them in any way. The visually-stunning "Bali House" is just another couple hundred yards further down the beach with the friendly caretaker's little beach house another 100 yards past. Wild goats are often roaming the woods so keep your eyes peeled and you will see these skittish little animals - sometimes up in the trees! Enjoy.

I was at first dreading the rain, but quickly I learned, the botanical gardens are an absolute enchanted forrest with the cozy rain. Grab a free umbrella and for $15 per person, you are entering this magnificent hike in the Hilo-Rainforest ! What an experience! The Orchid Garden is absolutely stunning and my other favorite was the blow-hole by the ocean that demonstrates the ocean's great force even on lesser wavy days. The Garden is open daily 9am - 4pm If you are interested in going, see us first and we can give you a brochure that will get you a free gift at the garden gift shop. This is a must-do for nature lovers and people who appreciate the calm of the Hawaiian rainforest ...

From the lava tubes, steam vents to the crater museum or the chain of crater road... there is a lot to see and experience! What you will see, however will often depend on "Pele" or just nature ... the flow is ever changing, it is hard to predict, and also in some cases dangerous. You can eat in the restaurant in the evening and watch the lava in the crater glow or go to Hilo town and get on a boat that will take you, where the lava flows into the ocean and witness how the island grows every moment!

The main attraction here is the trails that you can hike oceanside and with a map that is provided in the information shack you can learn about the Hawaiian culture and what they did in their daily lives. There is not a lot of shade, if you go on a sunny day, make sure you bring a hat and sun screen . The hikes are short, all way under 1 mile. As an attraction, this is easily added to a day that is already full of fun!

A trailhead that is only 10 minutes from the Hale. Be careful, you can get lost if you don't pay attention. However the beautiful scenery of over 3500 feet elevation is unique. Make sure you don't start hiking too late in the afternoon so you don't loose daylight. :-) Experienced hikers only!

Snorkeling Two Steps is always a fantastic experience. We have snorkeled here more times than we can count. It is definitely one of our favorite locations in all of the Hawaiian Islands. We love it because there is sea life and coral in abundance, some amazing topography to explore, and a variety of depths. * Chance on swimming with dolphins, it is a very open and unprotected bay... be sure to bring some experience or caution.

This is a wildlife park where you will attempt a long hike up the "Gello Mold" . It is definitely an advanced hike because of the constant climb to up to over 4000 ft. You will pass loose down, goats, Nenes, sheep, wild birds and a filed that is littered with obsidian crystals. Once on the top - on a clear day - you can see 5 Volcano tops: Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, Kohala, Hale Akala (Maui) The hike will take between 3-5 hours, be sure to check the local recommendations to gear and supplies (water, food). I recommend to attempt this hike early in the AM as the the noon time will every hot out there.
