High Flyers Guide to Tarifa

High Flyers Guide to Tarifa

Cafes

Tarifa has a vibrant gastro scene, and literally hundreds of restaurants, cafes and bars. First things first - going out for breakfast is a religion here in Spain (as anyone who has a 10.30 appointment at the Town Hall will know!!). So why not follow suit and check out some of the great cafes for a tostada con tomate y aceite, y un cafe con leche. Here are a few of our favourites: BOSSA - joined onto the Puerta de Jerez (the archway into the old town). Great scrambled eggs, good coffee and a fine selection of modern tapas from around the world. Top bar for early evening drinks and getting to know other tourists. LA PALMERA - literally 20m from High Flyers House. Be naughty and order Churros con chocolate ANDREA'S BRUNCH - really tasty, healthy menu. Super tasty take-away sandwiches for the beach. CAFE 10 - Wonderful coffee, tasty cakes CAFE AZUL - lovely cafe just onto the high street from the old town. OZU Bar - if you're coming kiting with us, the cafe-bar at Ozu is a great place to hang out before / after your kiting, with a super tasty menu.

Restaurants

Tarifa has a so many great restaurants. Where do we start? Well, close by to High Flyers House there are the following. These are just some of my favourites, there are SO many more! Old Town: Bar el Frances, La Garrocha, Los Melli, El Burgato, Lola, La Bonita, La Burla, Siglo19, Raizes, Silos, El Otro Melli, Boca Buena, and the superb Chilimosa vegetarian restaurant. Near the Port: El Ancla, La Pescaderia, Meson el Picoteo. Lunchtime tapas: El Tapeo - great locals restaurant with brilliant friendly service for locals and tourists alike. This should keep you going for a night or two!

Cool places to visit nearby

The tiny village of Bolonia, about 20 minute's drive from Tarifa has a stunning beach with huge sand dune, great chiringuitos (beach bars) and the amazing Roman archeological site, Baelo Claudia. When leaving Baelo Claudia, of you turn left and drive up the mountain you are treated to incredible views across the straits of Gibraltar and across to Morocco

Medi-evil hamlet 6km up a mountain side, around 30 minutes east of Tarifa. Only takes half an hour to wander around but the setting and the views are spectacular. there's a lovely little eco tapas bar just outside the main gate

An hour and a quarter away, Jerez is a great Andalucian city. One of the true heartlands of Flamenco, and one side of the Sherry Triangle - that also includes Sanlúcar and El Puerto de Santa María. As you get closer to Jerez you see the colour of the soil turn much whiter. and it's this chalky / limey soil (as well as the sunshine and the salty sea air) the creates the perfect environment for the grapes needed for sherry. But don't just read it from me, go to Jerez and take a tour of one of the many bodegas in the city. Tío Pepe is the most famous, and is a fantastic tour. Also great are Bodegas Tradición ( they also have an impressive private art collection including works by El Greco and Velázquez). And at Williams and Humbert you can also get to see Andalucian horses. There is flamenco all over the city (and NOT the touristy kind). Go to Tabanco el Pasaje -Jerez' oldest Tabanco (Sherry bar), right in the middle of the city centre, take a glass or two of sherry and watch and soak up the atmosphere, pain, heartache, passion, fun of Flamenco!

Cádiz is western Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city. Get lost in the lanes of the old town, go up El Torre Tavira to get a wonderful view, eat at the Mercado del Abastos (market - it has food stalls all around), go to the beach.
