Food Scene

On day trips to the Keys we usually stop here for a breakfast and mimosa/coffee in Key Largo. A local's favorite, been around forever, friendly staff and atmosphere, and yummy breakfasts.

Robbie's just has it all. Stop there for the views, for breakfast or lunch at the Hungry Tarpon, for key's type gifts and art at the stalls, to feed the massive Tarpon fish and pelicans, to take a boat out for fishing, to rent kayaks. Just stop there and you'll see what I mean. Not to be missed!

Best food in the Keys! In my opinion anyway. Always fresh caught and prepared, this is a class restaurant with a unique theme. If you don't know, a "square grouper" is a locals term for a kilo of cocaine or hash or marijuana found floating in the sea. This restaurant makes fun of the illicit drug trade. The place is often packed with a line waiting to get in, so a nice option is the upstairs new place they opened up, "because two joints are better than one."

Shopping

We love John at Key Lime Products. He's got loads of tropical themed decor items for sale, small and big things for inside and outside your home, or for keys themed gifts to take home. Ask for John, and don't be shy to ask for a little discount ;) also they serve the BEST frozen key lime pie and pie on a stick in the Keys.

Parks & Nature

This park is an underwater park, meaning you can plan a boat ride to the reef for snorkeling from here. They also have a great gift shop and nature center on land. The reefs they go to are wonderful, but I'd say only snorkel on a day with good visibility. It's a big trip out to the reef and you really only want to do it when you can see well. Also, it's nice because it's not a huge drive from Miami, yet you get to really experience the Florida keys.

The Keys do not have nice sandy beaches because of the massive coral reefs that stop the wave action of the ocean from making soft sand. That being said, I think this beach is one of the best ones in the Keys for sand and light snorkeling/swimming. Fun to tan, swim and play here.

The Dolphin Research Center is absolutely awesome. These dolphins are the relatives of the "Flipper" dolphins, plus others that were rescued and relocated here. They have a great gift shop, and for general admission ($28 adult/$23 kids) you can wander around watching dolphin shows and training sessions all day. They are open from 9-430. They also offer in water sessions with dolphins that are incredibly special, but of course more pricey.

The Turtle Hospital is a sanctuary and hospital facility for injured and disabled sea turtles. The gift shop is nice, but you really have to do their amazing 90 minute tour. They open at 9am and tours start on the hour until the last tour at 4pm. This tour is highly educational and interesting. Admission is $22 adults/$11 kids (4-12 yrs).

Bahia Honda is a cool state park with history, natural beauty, ocean, bay, beaches and a great gift shop. They also do a wonderful boat tour snorkel trip out to the reef a few times a day, weather permitting.

Entertainment & Activities

Well liked tour boat to snorkel at Sombrero Reef. Make sure the visibility is good for the trip out to the reef, and that you have plenty of water sport sun block on hand.

Sightseeing

This is a two for one recommendation. No Name Pub is famous for it's pizza and the walls covered in dollar bills. The pizza looks like the frozen food variety, but once you take a bite, you'll understand all the fuss. The other big reason for stopping here is to see the Key Deer. They are a small species of deer that are endangered and found only here. Once you find No Name Pub, you are highly likely to see the little Key Deer in yards, by canals, next to the road and sometimes they come right up to you looking for a bite to eat. It's highly illegal to feed them, just FYI, but I do see locals doing it on the sly ;) If you don't see any right there, cross over to No Name Key.
