This tourist spot is a must for its awesome decor. Located in the Mauna Lani Resort area, it is also close to The Shops and Mauna Lani. I recommend this place for Happy Hour, as the prices can be steep in comparison to mainland prices. There is often great live music to make it really feel like a hawaiian vacation.

Under the Bodhi Tree is an awesome restaurant if you are meat free like me! Their vegan dishes are wonderful, flavorful and at a medium price for island fare. My family loves the veggie burger and noodle dishes! Breakfast is great here, and if you are wanting a vegan dinner, be aware that they stop serving after 7:00pm.

Lava Lava Beach Club is just what it sounds like... a restaurant styled after a beach club. Located right on Anaeho'omalu Beach (often referred to as A Bay) in the Waikoloa Beach Resort complex... this is a huge favorite of locals and tourists alike. Sit under the giant fans in the restaurant... or choose a table right on the sand! There is also a large grassy area with games like corn-hole for families who need more entertainment. This is a great place to catch the sunset, and hear the waves while you are eating your fish tacos!

Seafood Bar is located near the Kawaihae Harbor and is not located in any of the "Resort" areas. My son-in-law loves this place because of the real "Harbor" feel, fresh sashimi, and iconic long bar. This is a great place for a solo dinner at the bartop while catching a game, or for a family out to dinner.

Red Water is an awesome restaurant. Located in the old Parker Ranch pavilion, it has a very "Old Hawaii" vibe. Most ingredients are locally sourced within mere miles of this tiny yet lovely restaurant. They have excellent dishes, local catch, and anything from local pork chops and rib-eye... to beautifully hand rolled, fresh sushi. Excellent flavors and excellent service. This is a must for anyone that considers themselves a Foodie. Be sure to make a reservation!

One of the most popular and longstanding restaurants on the north side of the island. This restaurant always uses locally sourced, fresh ingredients and is known for its high quality dishes and service. Along with Red Water, this is definitely on of my family's "special occasion" spots because of its quality and prices. Great for a date night or for a family dinner. Be sure to make a reservation!

This is my daughter's favorite coffee on the island! Although you may have to wait for your latte and bagel, it is surely worth the wait. It is really a local spot that makes you want to support "local" in every way. They promote local artists and photographers, use local farmers for all cafe items... and really feels like the spirit of Waimea is in the heart of this little coffee shop! Know that if its a Saturday, this is not your spot for a "quick" cup of coffee... but more of an experience within itself!

Drinks & Nightlife

I listed Sansei's as a bar, but it is really a restaurant. The thing about this part of the Big Island, is there is not a lot of nightlife. But, this restaurant does stay open late on Fridays and Saturdays and has great drinks and karaoke after 9! The sushi is always fresh and gets great reviews!

The Brewhouse has a great food, a few vegetarian options, and great beer. The seating and parking can be limited, but we love it for a nice night out. There is almost always live music on Friday and Saturdays!

Sightseeing

My daughter calls this her happy place! It is a beautiful lookout over Pololu Valley! The view is a stunning, majestic scene of the deep, green valleys that Hawaii is known for. If you are mobile, and into hiking, this is a great hike down to the bottom of the valley to a beautiful black sand beach and river valley. If you plan to hike down, know that it is not far in distance, but quite steep. We do not recommend heading down if it is raining. The trail can get slippery and muddy with rains and because of the steep elevation change, slides and runoff are dangerous. Also, the ocean here is not a place for anyone unfamiliar with our oceans- the tides and surf are unpredictable and dangerous.

The largest and one of the most iconic beaches in the Hawaiian Islands! This beach is awesome for large groups, or families. The sand is perfect, there are public restrooms, lifeguard towers, and the surf is manageable for all people depending on the season/day. Be sure to bring your cooler and umbrella, as shade can be hard to find and you'll want some snacks so that you can enjoy the beach as long as possible! Cooler/Umbrella/Chairs are found in your hall closet. Please take care of these, so that many guests can use these and make their trip enjoyable! :)

My family loves this beach because there is tons of shade under all the beautiful trees. Located at mile marker 69... this beach used to only be accessible by a short hike from the Highway. It was much harder to pack my chair, kids and snack in 30 years ago!!!! Now, I can park , shower, and with just a short walk have access to this beautiful beach. If you go early, and depending on the surf, this can be a great snorkeling spot!

This beach is stunning! Located in the Mauna Kea Beach Resort, you must enter through the guard gate at Mauna Kea. They allow 12 car passes a day... this means... you are not always guaranteed to get it. This really depends on peak seasons, the day of the week, and the time that you arrive to get a beach pass. During the busiest times, EARLY EARLY EARLY! In summer months, I've gotten a pass around 10am with no problem. Just be aware that early bird gets the worm! And boy oh boy is this beach worth it. Small, private, with lovely sand. It is also protected so its great for small children or those wanted a calm, relaxing surf (No bathroom or showers...)

We call this beach Kua! Its such an awesome beach, especially for body surfers or boogie boarders and is located farther south toward the airport. The sand here is quite magnificent and buttery! This beach has tons of parking, public restrooms and showers, and is great for those wanting an all day beach experience. There is no shade here, however, so bring an umbrella!

Shopping

My family loves this little town and always suggest visiting when friends and families are in town. There are fun shops and galleries and a great place to browse unique gifts like art and jewelry. Its also a fun day trip if you are headed to Pololu Valley. Browse the shops, get some Island Dreams Ice-cream, and enjoy this quaint little island town.
