This large number is due to the supernumerary vows of the inhabitants of the island and to old traditions according to which the inhabitants buried the dead on the walls of family temples. The most famous churches dating back to the Byzantine era and renowned for their architecture are Zoodochos Pigi, Agia Kyriaki, Agios Nikolaos and Agia Eleni.
