“Fortezza castle was build by the Venetians in the 16th century, and was captured by the Ottomans in 1646. There are great views over the sea and the city. There are mosques, art exhibitions and a small ancient style theater. My advice is to avoid the heat and go early in the evening (note that it closes at 19.30 or 20.00). Also note that during the summer concerts may take place which means that you may not get the chance to see the theater if it is not early enough.”

History Museum
“The famous museum is considered one of the most important in Europe and its exhibits include representative samples from all periods of prehistory and history of Crete, covering about 5,500 years. You will admire the frescoes of the Taurokathampions, the Phaistos Disc, the Princess with the Lilies, the Crocodilers and the Blue Bird. In August 2013 the new wing was opened with exhibits ranging from the Geometric, Archaic and Classical times to the Roman era.”

Aquarium
“At this huge modern aquarium, you can experience the underwater life of the Mediterranean. A fascinating day out for kids and adults alike, it has 32 vast glass tanks displaying everything from hunter sharks to miniscule seahorses, jellyfish, turtles, lobsters, and octopus, all in beautifully-lit turquoise sea water against a backdrop of rocks, sand, and seaweed. You'll find it at a former American military base in Gournes, 13 kilometers east of Heraklion.”

“Always the first thing you hear about Chania - the Venetian Harbour, the old port, the narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants. It is beautiful - that is to say much of the Chania you will want to see is clustered close to the harbour - old buildings, museums, churches and crafts shops (some with genuinely interesting and sometimes local, products on offer).”

Beach
“The Turquoise Paradise! Balos is surely the mostly photographed beach in Crete, a very favorite subject of all tourist guides for Greece. The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, vivid blue and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children. In many places the sand has a lovely pinkish color, because of millions of crushed shells. Beyond the rocks at the boundaries of the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling. The lagoon and the wider area, with rare species of flora and fauna, are protected under the Natura 2000 program.”

Natural Feature
“ A magnificent place, with exotic beauty, with dunes, cedars, white lilies, black rocks and naturally blue waters and whitish sand… The sandy peninsula joins the small islet with the land, creating a beautiful landscape. Walk the islet, with the utmost respect for the plants and animals you might come across and choose your own solitary dinghy, or sit in the shallow lagoon, ideal for small but older people who are open to playing with sand and water! Elafonissi is located 76 kilometers southwest of Chania, at the southwestern tip of Crete.”

Lake
“Lake Kourna is the only lake with fresh water in Crete. It is situated in a magnificent location, just 4km away from Georgioupolis Chania. It is a rather small lake, known from antiquity with the name Korisia. Lake Kournas is a remarkable destination for an afternoon walk or a day trip. The relaxing and beautiful landscape is ideal for nature lovers. In Lake Kournas, there are two fountains with only one of them being visible, especially during the end of the summer: the Eye, as the locals call the fountain. This natural lake was created by the holdback of the underwater that comes from the White Mountains, the resistant rocks and the lie of the natural cavity. Basically, the lake is a huge hollow which is fed from the southeast side with water due to its soil.”

“The Venetian Harbour of Rethymnon, next to the modern harbour of the city, with the Egyptian lighthouse is one of the most picturesque areas of the old town. It operated in the Byzantine period (after 961), but flourished during the Venetian period. The Venetians in the 14th century started major projects to facing the problem of siltation, which holds till today.”

“The most important center of Minoan civilization, Knossos, is built on the hill of Kefalas, surrounded by olives, vineyards and cypresses, is located 5 km south of Heraklion and covers an area of about 15 sq. Km. The selection of the area was based on its strategic location and its natural advantages. It is located between the two rivers Vlihia and Kirata (today Katsambas), with easy access to the sea, but also to the interior of Crete. According to tradition, it was the seat of King Minos and the capital of his state. Knossos was an important city in antiquity, with a continuous life from the Neolithic to the 5th century AD. century and there was built the first important Minoan palace of Crete. This is the most important example of the Minoan civilization, which lived in its prime from 1700 to 1450 BC. The area of the palace of Knossos is connected with fascinating myths, such as the Labyrinth with Minotaur and Daedalus with Icarus. Even in later periods it plays an important role and develops particularly, as in the Hellenistic era.”

Beach
“Preveli beach Some of Crete's most beautiful beaches are located on the far south coast that extends to the Libyan Sea. Hidden beneath the Preveli Monastery, this beautiful beach is at the mouth of a river and is backed by a lush palm forest. If you walk through the canyon you will find a small waterfall. To get to the beach you will need to leave your car and go downhill (relatively easy) for about 20 minutes. The palm trees were seriously damaged by the fire in 2010, but have since been naturally regenerated.”
