For 26 years, Sandra ran her bed and breakfast Inn in Eureka Springs, Arkansas (a Victorian artist colony in the Ozarks very much like Bisbee but a lot smaller!) and there were over 500 five-star reviews of the inn on TripAdvisor and other travel sites submitted before she retired, sold the inn January 2018 and moved to Old Bisbee. Says Sandra, "Missing all the wonderful guests and the fun of having an inn, my fairly new hubby Carl and I bought a vintage 1916 home in Old Bisbee which now has a brand new never-used casita built in our garden, always ready to welcome guests. I've had a very colorful and exciting life so far...learned to cook in France on an 18th century wood-burning stove when I was 18 and working on an advanced degree at Grenoble University in the Alps where I spent many hours skiing the avalanche trails. Before that, I was invited by Senator Wayne Morse (Oregon) to leave the UofO and come to DC to work as his constituent liaison while attending George Washington -- what an exciting experience in those days of statesmen rather than politicians! I then convinced Hewlett-Packard to create a job for me in their Geneva, Switz. office so I could go abroad as soon as I was finished at GW. After several years in France which included getting my master's degree while living in an 18th century villa outside Aix-en-Provence with no electricity (many candles and a fireplace in every room came in handy), no running water (I had to create a water line with a hose from the farmer's ditch and then stock up on chlorine tablets!), and the wood-burning stove. Before returning to the US, I took the last trip of the original Orient Express alone from Greece thru all those strange-sounding countries, with soldiers stopping the train and throwing passengers' cameras out on the tracks to be stomped on, leading male passengers into the woods never to return, and before finally arriving in Trieste, unhooking our car and leaving us stranded in the middle of the then Yugoslavia for 3 days without food or water! Before moving to Eureka Springs, at age 43, I bought a 35-foot sailboat, taught myself how to sail, got everything blue off the boat replacing it all with hot pink, and singlehanded my beloved sailboat (occasionally with my teenaged daughter as crew) from San Francisco to the Polynesian Triangle somewhere off Easter Island. It was a spiritual odyssey which took 7 years but that's another long story. My husband Carl (a widower who became the Inn's elf and later, Casita's elf after we met and were married in 2010), is a retired medievalist and avid traveler. He, too, has had a fascinating life, with a B.A. from Washington U. in Victorian History and English Lit, a Master's from Stanford in British History, and a Ph.D from USC in Medieval History. Carl has enjoyed several careers before retiring and now loves RV adventuring between stints of working on his book. (Carl and Sandra enjoyed a 2-year honeymoon, taking their RV 30,000 miles across the Trans-Canadian Highway, up the Al-Can to Inuvik at the Arctic Ocean, then over the Top of the World Highway from the Yukon to Chicken, Alaska, all around Alaska and then down Highway 1 to La Paz, in the Baja. Carl is just about finished with his book about their travels.)As hosts, they will happily share tales of their adventures. Sandra has just published her second book, "Out of the Fog! A Story of Survival, Faith and Courage". It's her memoir about addiction recovery and sailing adventures and is available at Amazon, Barnes&Noble and local bookstores.
