Once a forgotten place, the Tenderloin is now one of most rapidly changing neighborhoods in the city. Explore its urban mix of strong ethnic ties, vivid street life, and adventurous art galleries. We'll see the Tenderloin National Forest, a hidden gem where works of public art embody the neighborhood's spirit of urban renewal. We'll also visit a photography gallery, a studio for homeless artists, and a nearby museum dedicated to the history of the district.

I will be happy to prepare for you recommendations for other places of interest for you to explore after our adventure.

I'm a former college professor of urban and cultural studies. I have more than 25 years of experience as an art museum docent. My love affair with San Francisco has flourished under the city's openness and tolerance of cultural freedom.

Staðsetning

Just steps from Union Square, the Tenderloin neighborhood is currently experiencing a new wave of art and culture. We'll meet at a photography gallery on Market Street and eventually cover about 12 blocks of the neighborhood with stops along the way.

Great experience! We got to experience and appreciate a part of San Francisco that we probably wouldn't have visited on our own. Humbling, yet inspiring.

Bernard is super sweet and genuinely cares for the Tenderloin neighborhood. We went on this tour during an especially rainy Saturday which may have contributed to the lackluster guided tour. We ended up going to a couple of art galleries with limited to no guided tour communication, a very incredibly uncomfortable SRO interaction, the Tenderloin Museum, and a couple of very nice parks. The Tenderloin Museum is information-packed with history of the neighborhood so that was a good part of the experience. In the end, it was fine. We had gone on a stupendous tour the day before so maybe it made this less informative and less guided tour seem uninteresting? I don't know.

Our group works in the Tenderloin but we’ve never seen it from Bernard’s eyes! There is so much to see if you stop to take a look, and ask questions. I would say this tour is half about the tenderloin history and half about the art in the area. Would recommend.

The Tenderloin is often passed over by most visitors because of its grittiness, but look closer and it’s a fascinating story of a colourful city then and now. There is a lot of pride amongst the inhabitants who are ahead of their time in fighting for civil rights and freedom. Bernard took us to old hotels that are still serving long term residents, hidden art galleries and alleys with beautiful murals. I enjoyed the tour and recommend to those who want something different from the usual popular sights.

A lot of visitors to San Francisco miss the Tenderloin – a host of another tour I went on said she would be reluctant to visit the Tenderloin. But the area is at the heart of the city and is central to the city’s history. I enjoyed learning more about the area as we walked around and visited an art gallery, the Tenderloin Museum and the Tenderloin National Forest.
